PostSubject: Hello, let me introduce myself   Tue Feb 19, 2008 5:30 pm

hello

I am Rivka. My 8 year old son suddenly and unexpectedly reacted to wheat about a month ago. He developed a nasty red patchy scaly rash on his mouth and face within an hour of eating a cobbler. After a long process of elimination and food testing in the kitchen, the doctor believes it is a wheat allergy and we are going to be formally tested by an allergist on April 2. I was referred here by HadassahSukkot, and am very grateful for all the information I am learning here as well as a community that understands the difficulty of living with this type of problem.

Shalom and Prego! Laughing

So good to have you here!

I am sorry to hear of your recent discovery, but also happy you have found out so fast! Some take many many years for diagnosis. Is your son doing better since being taken of wheat products?

We are small right now, but I like that and think we can help each other more. Look around, read through our many posts, and if you are searching for something in particular, our search feature at the top of each page is great. Just type in a keyword and you will get any matches we have!

Please feel free to add any info that you come across that you think may help. We don't have that much info on nut allergies so all you can share will be appreciated!

Again welcome! and tell your friends! cheers flower

Bete' Avon!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

We knew it had to be one of two things for him to react to-strawberries or the cobbler crust. Since he eats strawberries every morning in his cereal, we knew it was not that but tested them anyway. He is symptom free as long as he avoids wheat and modified food starches. We found that one out by serving Sloppy Joes alone on a plate and getting a reaction. The allergist is going to test for the other things that go along with wheat allergies, but says for now to go WF/GF to be safe.

Between the 3 of them, they are allergic to oranges, soy, chocolate, nuts, and some legumes that are loosely related to nuts. I am more than happy to share what I have learned dealing with their allergies with anyone that asks.

Oh my, I shall pray for your sanity! There is a list around here somewhere that gives hidden glutens or wheat products, what to look out for, that should help a great deal. I haven't listed all allergens on the products that have been posted, but usually I list ingredients and there's always a link to check at the manufactures site if I haven't .

Very Happy

I've heard of all of these but the oranges, that is a new one to me! I will try to be on the lookout for your special needs. Tell me, do you cook all the same or make meals for each one, formulated for their personal allergies? Also what are your other special diet concerns? Do you feed no white sugar, or flour ( now I guess the flour is moot) and organics. Are these allergies in the family on either side? Did these just develop and what are their ages. Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to learn so as to help you more. I never finished schooling but was going to be a nutritionist. I love you

You mentioned that one or all? was allergic to soy, have you tried any of the rice milks? just be careful, not all are GF. There are articles on the site here about that, just do a search for rice milk.

Just be sure not to over compensate and give too many juices, the sugar could present a nightmare! Wink Best to get a juicer if you don't already have one and start getting them used to fresh juices. You can sneak in a lot of veggies and cover the taste with some watermelon, or apple and they won't know the difference! very healthy too and will give them vitamins and minerals and other nutrients they wouldn't normally eat or be able to consume in such a large amount. You can also add some rice milk to make like a smoothis, with some ice too in a blender.

Rivka, with your little one that has problems with oranges, does he/she have issues with other salicylates or amines?

If so, you may want to have a look at this list here

My mom can help you more on that end, as my dad can't have anything Salicylate, Saliyclite... most amines and now he can't have ANY legumes. Sad
She said he's limited to water, coffee, the 365 sodas from the Organic store off of Hwy 280 in Birmingham, and plain meat. Shocked

He's chemically sensitive to everything... it's really nuts... but if it is a Salicylate issue, she knows all the websites and food lists and how to explain it in a manageable way. The dietitian and nutritionist they saw was really nutso and no help...

This site might also help you Child Food Allergies and eating

They even have a gluten free section

The 12 year old: allergic to soy.

The 8 year old: soy, wheat, oranges (only oranges not grapefruits or lemons, etc).

The 6 year olds: soy, nuts, milk, chocolate, oranges (only), some other odd ball things like chickpeas, coconut.

We avoid sugars as much as possible, stevia is a great substitute since artificial sweetners give us migraines. I also use honey when possible. I have no trouble getting lots of fresh fruits and veggies into them. They love the rice milk.

As for dinner, I usually prepare for all. When the others want something with wheat, I make his without but just like ours so he does not feel left out of different. He gets "Mom's special pancakes and waffles" made with WF/GF mixes and I add fresh berries and bananas cooked in honey instead of syrup. I try to make meal times as easy and hassle free as possible.

I think I covered all the questions from previous posts, but if I forgot something you would like to know please repost it.

Well, it has been a while.

My son was told he did not have a problem with wheat. The rash still continues. But, I was just diagnosed with Celiac. After being told I had IBS, Restless Legs, milk allergy and Fibromyalgia, the drs tested and found it to be celiac instead.

It's been a while Rivka, but it could be all of the above -- minus the IBS with you having Celiac. My mom has all but the milk allergy and IBS.
