Public Holidays in Germany These are listed by abbreviated states (Länder), so you know which states (Länder) will have offices and official buildings closed on these public holidays.

Trust me when I say knowing these will save a lot of greif and lost time.

The German Länder (states) There are 16 Bundesländer. You can click on the names and it will give you more history and information on each Bundesland.

Religion in Germany A short but sweet overlook of the demographics here in Germany as far as religion goes.

If you are seeking "American Products" such as Molasses, here's one thing you need to know. . . Molasses isn't used in recipes here in Germany like it generally is in the US. Generally you will find Molasses online or at your local Apothecary -- and I found that REWE/TOOM Markt will carry Molasses from time to time in their Jelly/Jam section near Marmalade.
Here is one online source, and here is the one that is generally ordered by apothecaries (and can be ordered online as well). The source of this Molasses is not Sugar Cane, but Sugar-Beet. You can also find it here.

I have not yet found a source "Off base" (off of a Military installation) that supplies cornsyrup for candymaking.. Once I find a source, I'll update this.

Jewish Frankfurt(am Main) -- An invaluable resource if you're keeping Kosher like us Wink

Kosher Germany

A&L AVIV Kosher Butcher (Frankfurt Am Main) - you can order for delivery for a fee. Their GF items are few and far between, but I have found GF marshmallows there that have fish gelatin rather than gelatin of questionable source.

Kashrut.com's List of Kosher Fish (Trust me, you'll need it even if you haven't a kosher market)

Dorling Kindersley's German-English Visual Dictionary - I cannot begin to express how handy this little dictionary has been when I have gone shopping at the beginning!!! Not to mention when you try to tell people in your limited German what you can't have!!

Another Book you *must have* on hand is the current (2007/2008) Langenscheidt German Dictionary. Since German writing and vocabulary has undergone a slight change in the last 2 years, there are new rules -- and well it's good to have on hand.

A Classmate of mine from Thailand has a copy of Collin's German Dictionary plus grammar (German Spelling Reform incorporated) which is ISBN 0004723589.

Amazon.de
is similar to our American Amazon but not as "helpful" (vast?).. you can order books from there and dvds, household items..

German Celiac Society (Deutsche Zöliakie Gesellschaft e.V.)

Lesen.de is an invaluable source from time to time if you don't have a chance to get out to your local bookstores. . . they also have an English selection of books. Big grinning I'm an

Zöliakie-Online: Recipes and overview of Celiac Disease.

Natur.com Organic products etc. I don't recall there being much gluten free there... Hmm thinking but they did have other good products

Gluten Free Oat Matzoh If you are lucky enough to be in a Jewish community, it is possible they can order these for you. If they are willing to order it for you, this is the info page they need.

You can get a copy of these cards for about 2€ or so from the DZG (German Celiac Society), but if you're visiting, I can see needing to have this on hand 'right now' while going to restaurants if you haven't already gotten assurance that the restaurants you are going to are gluten free.

English:
Quote :
I have celiac disease and must maintain a strict gluten-free diet.
Due to this, may not eat any food that contains even the smallest amount/trace of wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt and unripe spelt grain and/or products manufactured from this such as bread crumbs, soup noodles, etc.
Can you point out dishes suitable for me from your menu, or prepare my dsh gluten-free (e.g., by omitting sauces containing flour or by preparing items without breading or flour)?
You can use as suitable replacements for me types of cereals/starches such as corn, rice, millet, potato starch or buckwheat.

Thank you very much for your efforts!

I believe the American Celiac Society has a similar card system you can invest in...

Nestle's Smarties:

Found out these are neither kosher nor vegetarian, as the red dye is from cochineal.

The reason I bring it up is a lot of folks will offer these instead of M&Ms, including McDonald's in their McFlurries (which are GF if you are careful to get GF candy in them, as they are stirred only with the spoon you get with the icecream)...

I'm having to recheck our M&Ms as well, as I overheard that the red m&ms use E120 as their source of color.. the same as the smarties Mad I swear, you try so hard not to eat bugs or pork, and people put them in your food deliberately! No

This is what I hate about things not having the same certification they do in the US. Makes everything incumbent on you, the consumer to make sure it's ok to have or not.

Germany: Things to Know for the Kosher Celiac Empty
PostSubject: M&Ms   Germany: Things to Know for the Kosher Celiac EmptyFri Mar 14, 2008 2:43 am

I found out for sure that the additive IS in fact in the M&Ms here.

So if ya'll ever come to visit and you're like me with a major M&M addiction... BRING it with you. Rolling Eyes

I emailed Mars Company since I'm obviously all ticked off about it.. Maybe they'll email me back.

My Feedback as of today:

Quote :

Hi,

I wanted to contact the company considering I tend to make a rather large investment every month to feed my M&M craving, and just found out that I can no longer safely do so here in the EU. Sad

Up until recently I had been getting M&Ms because back home in the US, there's no question about them being OK (kosher-wise) for consumption.. and then I find on the back of the packages here in Germany, additive E120 (Cochneal/Carmine) for the red food dye.
WHY?!?!?!?!
I moved here unaffiliated with the military, which means now my access to M&Ms is totally cut off unless someone mails them to me in the USA.

Very, very upset about this. I get "addicted" as a kid with the bright colored candies I can count, seperate by color and put in cookies, and now even that is forbidden.

I hate to break it to ya'll, but when you have dietary restrictions it isn't fun when additives are hidden in numbers rather than plainly stated, especially when you have to keep a gluten free diet on top of those dietary restrictions; which believe you me, is hard enough as it is.

Is there not a kosher supplier of M&Ms here, or M&Ms that do not have the evil E120 in them that we can have?

There's not much choice in "American" candy over here that is gluten free, and I had been so excited until I read the back of the package.

I look forward to hearing from ya'll.

Can you tell I'm peeved? Razz

I heard back from Mars. Total Non-Answer.

SO..... Mad My DH will have to help me reconstruct my question/comment to them. I'll just go to the Mars Germany website and contact them. I'm *not* going downstairs and purchasing postage (risking contamination and dermatitis herpetiformus) just to get an answer by mail.
