PostSubject: Gluten recovery   Gluten recovery EmptyWed Jan 30, 2008 11:36 pm

I somehow ingested some gluten on Saturday night. It was after my husband made me a small sandwich before going out. The sandwich was made with GF corn cakes, a hard cooked egg and Hellmans mayo, not used by anyone eating gluten. That was it. About 45 minutes later I started to have some gurgling, and belching. A few hours later I was getting extreme cramps that wouldn't let up. The pain was so bad I could barely drive home.No

These lasted for about 4-5 hours with much gurgling, but no trips to the BR. However the next day, soon after having breakfast I did get sick and later in the day after eating again.

I did not have a Bowel movement Toilet Paper until today and for the first two days after getting sick ( on Sunday) I would be awake for about 8 hours then would get so sleepy, I would fall asleep for 2-3 hours, and that is after getting a full nights sleep. Then it was very hard for me to wake up. This happened Monday and tuesday. On Wednesday I fought it really hard, but was exhusted.

I am just starting to feel recovering today. sunny

I don't remember it ever being this bad, the cramps and the recovery time.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this? And what do you do to combat it? I already take a strong multi vitamin and eat regularly, and healthy.

Ach, du Arme!!! (You poor thing!!)

*big hugs*

Definitely try lying low for a few days, even if that means taking naps, and make sure you eat lots of fruits and veggies that will help clean your sytem but also fortify it. Anything you've done to repair your intestines has been somewhat thwarted by your recent fight with gluten, so it will take a while to bounce back.

Keep in mind, if you have issues with GERD or Acid Reflux or heartburn, you will have problems with this when you rebound. Make sure you do your best not to have sodas (pop), or items with acids in them (including plant based).
You may have to eat really bland items and just watch out for grains for a while.

I'll try to remember to ask my sister what it was she did when he had an outbreak,as I have to make a run to the store for this next week or so's groceries and pick up a few sales items we need for the house as well. (MIL Is coming by soon to get me, or I have to go to her - I'm not sure which just yet).

I wish to goodness I could remember what all triggers acid reflux, but I seem to remember it was grains and sugars sometimes too, so if you have access to a list which details what items have a low glycemic level, that might also help.

I seem to remember having issues with heartburn when I got contaminated in Zürich and then again when we got back into Germany during the honeymoon. That was so not fun, and the only thing I could do since it slowed my gut so much was to drink sodas to get some kind of gas movement going. No I was so glad my DH brought some medication along for stomach troubles, as I needed it badly and it was costly in the apothecary.

I haven't had any issues while being pregnant, but then again I've been really super strict about the issue since I know it can cause miscarriage... so I don't even share items with folks at school that I know will be eating gluten during our approved 15 minute breaks (we have two between the 4 hrs we're there)... and I don't shake hands at all.

As far as parties and such go, We bring EVERYTHING we need for a meal with us in a shopping basket (typical of Europe), and I try to remember to bring aluminum foil if we need to heat anything in the oven, or ask to have some when we do. The only thing definitively GF here is french fries, and we have to really check to see if those are being cooked (at friends) in a dedicated pan or deep-fryer or if we're just better off with chips we brough.

Most seem to understand, and we've had no issues with the friends that come over for meals and "game nights" here at the apartment. I usually cook for us all, or we order something out (döner usually).

Do take care of yourself ok!?
I'll check again through my links and see what I can find and ask my mom and sister as well *hugs*

Hey, Just before I log out, I wanted you to know I asked my mom since she popped online. She said cabbage is good to help you rebound from gluten - and the Jewish Penicillin recipe (soup/stew) is something that will help you along in repairs and bounding back as well.

There is a really good copy of the recipe here: http://www.cookingcache.com/soupsand/jewishpenicillin.shtml

And here's the one my mom always makes:

Quote :
Healing Soup aka Jewish Penicillin

This is my old stand by for treating accidental gluten ingestion, colds, viruses...you name it. It's chock full of natural antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, boosted with ginger, cabbage and lemon for the liver and digestion, and beta carotene for the lungs.

For those who like chicken, you can add 1 to 2 cups cooked shredded chicken to this recipe in the last 15 minutes of cooking.

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, peeled, diced
4-5 cloves garlic, minced
1 inch fresh ginger root, grated
2 stalks celery, chopped
2-3 large carrots, chopped
1 package shredded cabbage mix (or 2-3 cups finely shredded cabbage)
1 sweet potato, peeled, diced
2 parsnips, peeled, cored, diced
2 quarts GF chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Juice of 1 lemon
sea salt and pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon honey

Sometimes I add some hot curry or a dash of cayenne for its warming properties (especially good for a cold or congestion).

In a large heavy-bottomed soup pot heat the olive oil over medium-high heat and cook the onion for five minutes until softened (do not brown). Add the garlic, ginger, celery, carrots and cabbage (and curry/cayenne if adding) and stir-fry for five minutes.

Add the sweet potato, parsnips and broth; stir and cover; bring to a simmer then lower the heat to simmer for 45 minutes or so. Add the cider vinegar and lemon, season with sea salt and pepper, to taste. Stir in the spoonful of honey; warm through and serve with love.

wow ,that recipe is much different than my Bubbe's Rx. Smile Is that the southern version? Wink

I don't know why the acid problems now, I didn't have it before, even with high acidic foods. and now it seems anything can cause it.

But the severe cramps when it happened this time, I know it had to be some dust from something my husband handled either at synogogue or the dogs food, because it wasn't anything in the food itself. This is what puzzles me, the strong reaction, such pain, I never had before, except childbirth! affraid

I am really wondering if once you start healing it is a stronger reaction, like if you go off eating regular meat and switch to organic stricktly for a month and try to eat the regular meat again ( with all it's hormones and antibiotics, and whatever else in there) your body will react violently with the first bite and throw it back out. So I am wondering if its the same with going GF?

it's possible... esp if you have such a low tolerance for gluten!

I dunno if that is a southern version or not, there's been about three or four different versions of the same 'idea' online and in recipe books.

BTW; we've gone to putting your Rice cookbook to use this week. I finally got where I could sit down and play with the recipes some. We made Thai stir-fry tonight and had it with stir-fry (Japanese...lol) cabbage.

I seem to be making heaps of cabbage lately. Dunno if that's because it's so cheap, so easy.. or I just need the vitamins from it. . . or you've been on the mind! Wink

are you feeling any better? (BTW I know what you mean about the pains with gluten - it's so worse than so many other things... scary as that thought is!)

I been doing real good until this. I think I am going to have to throw the doggies bisquits out and make her some gluten free ones. She loves all the other stuff I make so shouldn't be a problem, I just can't seem to find a recipe anywhere. I will try to come up with something myself, I'll get some liver, I know she likes that flavor so even if it is sort of a flop , she'll eat them.

cabbage, why would that make you thinkl of me? Or did you mean the rice? I am not a cabbage fan at all. Only for special cole slaw very once in a while. In fact I still have two heads from the fall farm stand in the fridge! What a Face

I guess my bubbe's recipe is the more simpler type, Chicken, a nice chicken, stewed very gently, then the chicken picked off and the bones and skins returned to the pot to get the goodness out of the bones. Then add egg noodles, carrots, celery and onions, and whatever herbs to go you have on hand. I do like to add garlic. But I never heard of yams, I love them , so I certainly wouldn't mind! Smile I will try this the next I make it, which I will be making my own noodle for ( see the new recipe for pasta) because the last batch I made I left it on the stove for Erev Shabbat and all the noodles ( they were corn) disintegrated! boy what a mess, and on Shabbat when I couldn't do anything to fix it.
